It has been a long week for Skamania County ARES. It all began last Sunday, July 2nd, when a fire broke out near Tunnel 5 on WA SR14 near Underwood. It quickly climbed the bluff and an evacuation of all residents in Underwood received Level 3 evacuation notices.

On Monday, July 3rd, two SCARES members activated to the EOC in Stevenson. Our main job was answering EOC phones to provide accurate information to county residents. News media often had inaccurate or dated information. Social media is a great emergency tool but it is often a forum for spreading unsubstantiated rumors, especially in the comments sections.

During this fire, the CenturyLink landlines in Mill A and Willard went down. Skamania Co. dispatch requested an ARES member be stationed at the Mill A School to provide emergency access to dispatch for those in these communities that did have have cell phone access. The phone line was repaired on Thursday afternoon.

At 6:00pm Friday, July 7th, SCARES demobilized and is now standing by for recall.

SCARES members who were activated: Don K7DTS, John K7JPX, Norman KJ7VHX, Ole KI7MBR, Rick AE7UR, Dick KK7JHR, and Kevin KE7IN.
