Multi-Use Radio Service (MURS) VHF frequencies are available to the general public. MURS is defined by the FCC as “a private, two-way, short-distance voice or data communications service for personal or business activities of the general public.”
Family Radio Service (FRS) and General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) UHF frequencies are available to the general public. FRS does not require a license but GMRS does require a license but a test is not required. Current cost is $65 for a GMRS license.
Many amateur transceivers (handheld and mobile) will allow operation on FRS and GMRS frequencies. It may be useful to program these into your transceiver. However, you must make sure you observe all FCC rules when doing so!
